I made an end-to-end encripted messaging web app. Currently, everyone can chat with each other (except for blocked pairs). You search by picking the location where you want to appear, and finding those who picked a similar location. Could be useful for finding interesting people.
However, I think a city/district/topic search tree would be simpler and safer than sorting by distance. Distance-based sorting may be ok if the location picker is disabled by default. Users who both have it on would benefit, and others shouldn't be bothered. Another todo is restricting chat to contacts-only by default.
Recently I invited my friends to test it out, and a few people from the internet joined randomly, but the number of users is still too small to see interesting network effects.
